Sam W. Irby was born in Mobile, Alabama, on January 17, 1944, and has been a lifelong resident of Baldwin County, Alabama. He attended elementary school through high school in the Fairhope School System and is a 1962 graduate of Fairhope High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Auburn University in 1966, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama in 1970. Sam Irby is a member of the Phi Alpha Beta Legal Fraternity and the Phi Kappa Phi Social Fraternity.

Sam Irby has been a practicing attorney in Baldwin County since 1971. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar and the United States District Court in 1971 and was admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court in 1978. He is a member of the Baldwin County Bar Association, and serves as a member of the Executive Committee; member of the Alabama Bar Association, and serves as a Member of the Board of Bar Commissioners 28th Judicial Circuit; Trustee of the Alabama State Bar Foundation; member of the American Bar Association; and member of the Estate Planning Council of Mobile, Inc..

Sam Irby has served in various capacities for several local organizations. He is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thomas Hospital, a non-profit hospital; former President and member of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce; and Charter Member and former President of the Eastern Shore Sertoma Club.
